The Metropole in history
The story of an institution
The Met, originally known as the Metropole Theatre and
Dance Hall, has had a significant role in the history of Abertillery,
and for over 100 years has been recognised as a local centre to
the community.
In the 1920s Abertillery was the second largest town in Monmouthshire,
second only to Newport. At this time its population was an incredible
40,000 due to the expansion of the coal mining industry. The growth
meant new houses and shops were built and most importantly a new
Market Hall – The Metropole – commissioned.
Now around 120 years old, in its hey day, The Met had a fantastic
ballroom, Victorian-style theatre and indoor market on the ground
floor. Many locals will remember dancing in the ballroom and visiting
the cinema. Over the years, the coal mining industry effectively
disappeared and the town's prosperity declined. The Met fell into
disrepair and eventually had to close due to structural problems.
The regeneration of Abertillery is high on the agenda for Blaenau
Gwent County Borough Council and the refurbishment of the Metropole
is a significant step towards the realisation of these plans. Throughout
the last one hundred years the Metropole has had a loyal following
& support from locals and is regarded as a prestigious building
for the town – signifying wealth and success.
Once refurbished, it will once again take a lead in putting Abertillery
back on the map and bring new economic benefit to the region.
